MakeDC's first Pitch Competition invited local D.C. groups and organizations with a social or environmental mission to tell us about a pressing design need. The prize: $20,000 in professional design services to help “realize a dream.”

Pitch Night took place on the evening of May 17 at the District Architecture Center. Seven finalists presented their projects and needs to the jury in a Pecha Kucha-style format.

But this wasn't a private gathering: We invited the public to join us; to meet the finalists, jurors, and the MakeDC team; and to participate in the competition. Every attendee had a voice toward the People's Choice, which was added to the jurors' votes — giving the audience a place at the judges' table.

We are happy to report that the event was a tremendous success, beating even our own expectations. Watch the video to see highlights from the night and to learn more about all of the finalists.

Stay tuned for updates about our work with the winning organization, Joseph's House!
