MakeDC Public Interest Design

MakeDC's first Designing Dreams Pitch Competition invited local D.C. groups and organizations with a social or environmental mission to tell us about a pressing design need. The prize: $20,000 in professional design services from MakeDC to help “realize a dream.”

Pitch Night took place on May 17, 2014, at the District Architecture Center. Seven finalists presented their projects and needs to the jury in a Pecha Kucha-style format.

But this wasn't a private gathering: We invited the public to join us; to meet the finalists, jurors, and the MakeDC team; and to participate in the competition. Every attendee had a voice toward the People's Choice, which was added to the jurors' votes — giving the audience a place at the judges' table.

We are happy to report that the event was a tremendous success, beating even our own expectations. Watch the video to see highlights from the night and to learn more about all of the finalists.
